The hills around the town of Vienne have been given a new burst of life by three Rhône vignerons. Roman legions are thought to have planted the first vineyard here around 50 BC. In the place where Pliny the Elder described the vines planted by the Allobroges, (probably Syrah), Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, cultivate magnificent Syrah and Viognier grapes with obvious passion and great skill. The Domaine des Vins de Vienne also produces the most wonderful Sotanum, and its talents extend to other Rhône appellations, mainly Côte-Rotie, Condrieu and Châteauneuf.
