The River Loire runs North from the Massif Central in the heart of France, then West into the Atlantic. The longest river in France, famous for its castles and colourful history, is home to treasures of another kind. Sauvignon Blanc rules the central Loire with the famous Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé appellations, while Chinon, birthplace of French writer Rabelais, is home to the fabulous syrupy wines of Layon and dry Savennières, both made from Chenin Blanc grapes. Sandstone, schist and limestone terroirs produce everything from dry to sweet, sparkling to rosé in this gentle climate.
