Description of this Saint-Emilion

The word 'gaffelière comes from gaffet, meaning one who suffers from leprosy. For many years the area around the château was stricken by leprosy and when the château was built, it took on this rather grim name. Archeological digs conducted by the Count of Malet Roquefort discovered buried mosaics with pictures of vines planted at la Gaffelière in Roman times. The modern 22 hectare vineyard planted on clay-limestone soils has mostly Merlot grapes with some Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon.
