Long recognised as the site of some of the world's best surfing, the Margaret River region of South-Western Australia with its fresh, enticing climate is increasingly known for its world class wines. Cape Mentelle Vineyards, founded by David Hohnen, is considered the benchmark for the region. Hohnen, a man with considerable talent and creative flair was among the first to identify the potential for premium wines in the Margaret River area. Owned by Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin (Moët-Hennessey Group, shareholder of WINE and CO) Cape Mentelle produces reds and whites bearing the stamp of this great island continent, filled with the subtle scents of eucalyptus. Look out for the Bordeaux-like quality of the Sémillon-Sauvignon blend. A full selection of wines from this fine winery will be available at the beginning of 2002.
